In 2003, the LTWA embarked upon yet another important preservation project: the digitization of the Narthang Edition of the Kangyur and Tengyur, one of the oldest and rarest manuscripts in the library. Block printed in mid-18th century, the edition contains a complete set of 102 and 224 volumes of the Kangyur and Tengyur respectively. Undertaken with the financial and technical assistance of the Norshing Project of Japan , the digitization process is due to be completed in 2008. Each and every folio of the edition is being photographed with an ultra high-resolution camera, making available a complete set of the Kangyur and Tengyur in digital format, while conserving the original. A digital copy (in CD format) of the collection will be available to scholars, researchers, students and the interested public.
