Over 11,000 books in English and foreign languages dealing with Buddhism and Tibet .
The Foreign Language Reference Library has a collection of more than 11,000 volumes, predominantly dealing with language, philosophy, arts and culture, medicine, geography, travel, the history and politics of Tibet, and the Himalayan region. More than 120 journals and periodicals of related interest are currently received. There are also collections of rare and out-of-print books, files of newspaper clippings covering the decades of the Tibetan diaspora, and collections of pamphlets, brochures and other ephemera concerning the Tibetan community dating back to 1959. The collection is primarily in English but also includes titles in other European and Indian languages, as well as languages such as Japanese, Chinese, Russian, Mongolian and Korean.
The foreign language collection continues to expand. New acquisitions are received each year from various sources in addition to outright purchases. Publication exchange programs swap books published by the LTWA for volumes from other publishers and libraries. Copies of doctoral dissertations are regularly received from University Microfilm International. Books are also donated each year by visiting scholars and by other institutions not formally part of the publication exchange program.
On average, 2,500 people including scholars, researchers and Dharma students enroll as members of the library each year for a small fee. A foreign section reading room is provided where holdings are accessed through a computer catalogue. Research guidance is available from resident scholars. Like the Tibetan manuscript section, the foreign language library maintains manuscript exchange programs with other institutions around the world. In special cases, institutions provide photocopies of rare and important works that are otherwise unavailable for general circulation or loan.
