Since its inception in 1976, the library's audiovisual archive has amassed 26,000 hours of sound and video recordings documenting all aspects of Tibetan life. Recordings date from as early as 1956 – before exile – when a pilgrimage to India by the Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama was captured on film. The archive contains interviews, documentaries, teachings, radio broadcasts and all manner of recordings related to Tibet . Interviews are with elders, religious figures, craftspeople, doctors, astrologers, storytellers, traders, pilgrims, ex-servicemen, and former government officials. Teachings, discourses and lectures by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and other eminent lamas and scholars form a significant part of the collection. In addition, the library records and archives its own twice-daily Buddhist philosophy lectures, which are available online.
The audiovisual collection is recorded in all imaginable formats, from old-school film spools to high-tech DAT tapes. The process of converting old media into best-quality digital format has been ongoing since 2001, both safeguarding the collection and making it more readily available. In future, the library hopes to create a public listening lab to improve access to this remarkable collection.
